Can you trust Monsanto?

Can you trust Monsanto?

The news on GMOs has ratcheted-up! To many it represents a "Frankenstein" version of food production, while for others it's a solution to feed the overpopulation of the world. GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms are genetically modified foods harvested from farm crops.

"Modification" begins within a lab by engineering plants at a genetic DNA level. Presently scientists have had success and are doing further experiments of inserting DNA of other plants, animals, bacteria and viruses into food plant cells, making them resistant to pests and harsh weather conditions. Some scientists believe GMOs used for commercial agriculture are "more precise" than traditional farming methods like "selective breeding".

Selective plant breeding is limited to "related" species, it's a cross-pollination process that's been used for centuries starting with the domestication of wild plants. With GMO technology, scientists now breed crop plants mixed with a soil bacteria gene that acts as an herbicide and insecticide. Monsanto was not the first to commercially license the use of GM foods, it was the company Calgene, in 1994 they marketed a "delayed ripening tomato" and slowed it from softening or "rotting", (Monsanto bought Calgene in 1996).
