Hailing from Calgary, “The Girl Next Door” has always been fond of hockey – or at least in some cases, the men who play it. Elisha recently got engaged to Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, who she started dating in 2008 when he was a member of the Calgary Flames.
Prior to scoring with the Edmonton-born defenceman, Cuthbert had a two-year relationship with NHL star Sean Avery, which didn't exactly have its own happy ending. After a morning skate in Calgary, Alberta with the Dallas Stars, Avery spoke to reporters regarding remarks he made about another NHL star and he wound up biting off more than he could chew. In front of the media, Avery stated, “I'm really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends)”. The comment actually contained the phrase “sloppy seconds”, which was directed at Cuthbert and Phaneuf, causing a bit of outcry in Hollywood and the sports world. Luckily, Avery's inappropriate comments about the actress garnered attention from the NHL's commissioner who disciplined him with a lengthy suspension.
